GLBA Metadata Information File As of: 7/15/95 6:38:13 PM ----------------------- Project Information -------------------------------- Project: Halibut Population Owner : Philip N. Hooge Created: 6/1/92 2:20:12 PM Summary: Represented here are the results of studies on pacific halibut population parameters and habitat correlates. These studies were begun as part of an effort to quantify the ecosystem level effects of the commercial harvest of halibut as part of a 10 year study to evaluate the commercial harvest of halibut in Glacier Bay National Park. The studies represented here were initiated to understand the ecological consequences of halibut habitat choice, population parameters, changes in CPUE, and the distribution of predators and prey of halibut which could provide needed data to model the effects of commercial fishing on halibut. Methodologies used include capturing halibut using commercial gear in a standardized fashion (stratified random design, standardized equipment) wire-tagging halibut and looking at recaptures in the commercial harvest, and obtaining morphological measurements on halibut and bycatch. Hooge Publication Date (7.1.2): Not Available Citation Information: Title(1.1): Data on the long-lines set to capture fish Abstract(1.2.1): This dataset contains information on standardized long-lines set in Glacier Bay to catch Pacific halibut. Characteristics of the long-line and setting parameters are recorded. Purpose(1.2.2): These data were collected as part of an effort to quantify the ecosystem level effects of the commercial harvest of halibut as part of a 10 year study to evaluate the commercial harvest of halibut in Glacier Bay National Park. Knowledge of the effects of commercial fishing on CPUE, habitat selection, the effects of recent glaciation and oceanographic conditions on halibut and other ground fish distribution and general population parameters was lacking in Glacier Bay and was determined to be necessary to evaluate what effects the commercial harvest has on the Glacier Bay Ecosystem. A large stratified- random sample was set between Willoughby/Drake Islands and the Marble Islands. In addition there are a series of 4 nautical mile spaced longlines set up the Bay and each Arm. Such areas include sensitive information on the locations of endangered species or cultural artifacts and data which contain private or confidential information. Data sets which are not complete may have access constraints until completion. Please contact the Information Management Systems Administrator at the Glacier Bay Field Station for details on any access constraints. Use Constraints(1.8): Some Glacier Bay Ecosystem Project data sets may contain data with use constraints. Such areas include sensitive information on the locations of endangered species or cultural artifacts and data which contain private or confidential information. In addition some data sets are collaborative efforts with outside researchers and represent unpublished work for which we request respect for intellectual property rights. Some data sets are not complete and if access is given the use may be restricted until completion. Please contact the Information Management Systems Administrator at the Glacier Bay Field Station for details on any use constraints. Data Quality Information Attribute Accuracy: Attribute Accuracy Report(2.1.1): Data prior to 1994 has a estimated locational error of about 100 meters. Data from 1994 has a locational error of approximately 20 meters. Completeness Report(2.3): 1995 data not entered. Data set is complete for 1992-1993. Lineage Process Step: Process Description(2.5.2.1): Capture locations were determined before 1994 by the use of GPS fixes at the point the fish was taken from the water on long-lines. From 1994 the position of the hook at the setting of the long-line was determined by recording with GPS the time and track line (with multiple fixes) of the set and then calculating the position of each numbered hook. This results in capture fixes being of much greater accuracy. Release locations were determined with the use of GPS fixes at the release site. This includes morphological measurements, sex, and condition as well as exact capture locations, hook size, bait, gear and other parameters. Length measurements as well as exact catch locations, hook size, and bait are recorded. Hooge Publication Date (7.1.2): Not Available Citation Information: Title(1.1): Tracklines of the research longlines Abstract(1.2.1): This dataset contains information on the tracklines that were followed while setting research long-lines for Pacific halibut at Glacier Bay National Park. Lineage Process Step: Process Description(2.5.2.1): From 1994 the position of the hook at the setting of the long-line was determined by recording with GPS the time and track line (with multiple fixes) of the set and then calculating the position of each numbered hook. This results in capture fixes being of much greater accuracy. Release locations were determined with the use of GPS fixes at the release site.
