The Exxon Valdez tanker struck Bligh Reef on March 24, 1989, spilling 11 tons
of crude oil. The spill area extended approximately 28, 500 sq. km throughout
western Prince William Sound and into the Gulf of Alaska and Lower Cook Inlet.

Western Prince William Sound was hit hardest, based on its geographic proximity to the spill area, the substrate penetration and volatility of the oil, itself. Therefore, the NVP project focuses on western Prince William Sound as an indicator of oil-spill ecosystem recovery.
