Testing new electronic archival tags in Alaska salmon

Objective 4

Release coho smolts into Ship Creek, spring 2001, 2002, 2003.

Map of Cook Inlet, Alaska with Ship Creek pointed out

During the last week in May, our study group of coho join the rest of the Fort Richardson Ship Creek coho salmon smolts in a raceway connected directly to Ship Creek at Elmendorf Fish Hatchery.

Coho are held in these raceways to aid in imprinting to Ship Creek water chemistry so they will return as spawning adults the following season.  Coho smolts are held for up to four days before the raceway gates are pulled, allowing the coho smolts to exit the raceway on their own volition and enter Ship Creek on their way to Cook Inlet.
