Title: Osprey Monitoring
Abstract: Since 1983, the Alaska Department of Fish and Game has monitored Ospreys (Pandion haliaetus) at a unique nesting concentration around Tetlin Lake and less regularly in other areas. Aerial surveys are conducted in May to determine occupancy of nest sites, and a second visit in late July/early August is made to assess productivity and band nestlings. More than 200 nestlings have been banded in the past 12 years. Since 1988, red color bands with visible alpha characters have been applied in addition to standard U. S. Fish and Wildlife Service aluminum bands. Since 1992, local school children have participated in nest visits through a U. S. Fish and Wildlife Service grant.
