Bottom Trawls

In the summer of 1997 we sampled benthic fish in Kachemak Bay with a bottom trawl. The figure below shows how the number of fish in the benthic community increased from July to August. This trend may be because we caught newly recruited juvenile fish in August that were too small to be caught in July. Another theory is that some species of fish migrate close to shore in the summer. Although this trend is poorly understood, it has been documented before in other juvenile groundfish studies.
