On our project, cast netting is only used as an opportunistic fishing method. At this time we do not use a protocol to sample fish with cast nets. We carry the net with us throughout the summer and use it to catch forage fish that are at the surface of the water and are directly being preyed upon by seabirds. We have found that cast netting was an effective fishing technique, and it worked especially well at capturing Pacific sand lance.
