Seabird Diets

We sampled diets of adult and chick murres at 3 colonies in lower Cook Inlet and compared these to trawl catches in the same areas. Major conclusions: The composition of adult diets bore some resemblance to what was caught in trawls, suggesting that adults ate what was largely available. Differences in adult diets among the 3 colonies appeared to result mostly in regional differences in the food base (as indicated by trawl catches). Chick diets differed radically from adults and from trawl catches. It appears that chick are maintained as much as possible on rich fatty species such as capelin and other osmerids, while adults eat lower quality food themselves.
