Autumn migration routes and staging areas
used by Pacific common eiders - 2003

These maps include daily locations of common eiders during autumn migration from the North Slope, Alaska until reaching wintering areas. All birds were marked at Simpson Lagoon, North Slope during July 2003. Satellite transmitters were programmed to provide data for 6 hours every 25 hours (6 on:19 off) until early November 2003. Several transmitters provided additional data into December.

Winter sites of Pacific common eiders
marked on the North Slope, Alaska

This map includes the primary 2001-2002 winter locations of 13 Pacific common eiders marked in July on barrier islands off the North Slope Alaska. One transmitter failed to provide adequate location data (known alive).

Spring migration routes and staging areas used
by Pacific Common Eiders marked on the North Slope, AK

This map includes the primary spring (April - June) 2002 locations of seven Pacific common eiders marked in July 2001on barrier islands off the North Slope Alaska. Transmitters provided locations every seven days from July 2001 to 1 April 2002. Beginning on 1 April, transmitters were programmed to provide locations daily (6 hours on: 19 hours off) until the batteries were expected to fail (mid-June 2002). Of the birds known to have survived the winter, the batteries failed prematurely for two birds (known alive, no locations) and one transmitter quit transmitting (no signals) before spring migration began.
