Autumn
migration routes and staging areas
used by long-tailed ducks
These
maps include all locations during autumn and mid-winter of adult
female long-tailed ducks marked when flightless at Point Thomson,
Alaska, during 8-12 August 2002. Satellite transmitters were programmed
to provide locations for a six hour period at 25 hour intervals
(6 on:19 off). The estimated battery life was expected to be about
four months (August - December 2002).

Winter
sites of long-tailed ducks
marked on the North Slope, Alaska
This map includes the primary 2002-2003 winter
locations of 29 long-tailed ducks marked at Point Thomson, North
Slope, Alaska, in August 2002. One of 30 birds died at the marking
area in August before migration began. Transmitters #32957 through
#32975 are providing locations at seven day intervals; transmitters
#32976 through 32992 provided locations daily until early December
when the batteries quit (low battery voltage). Bird #32980 died
between 13-14 December 2002, bird #32959 died between 4-30 January
2003, bird #32975 died between 7-20 January 2003.
