Demonstration module of Alaska aquatic GIS

There is a strong need to connect geographic information on Alaskan streams and their biotic components to existing GIS coverages. This is because: 1) habitat managers need more and faster information to evaluate actual and potential impacts from activities such as mining, logging, dam construction, and water withdrawals; 2) there is a need for monitoring the status and trends of anadromous and other fish populations; 3) agency, student, and public users desire easier and quicker information access; and 4) research opportunities will be enhanced when connection of influential variables and dependent fisheries and aquatic information is easier and more accessible. To meet these needs, the objectives of this study are to 1) demonstrate the practicality of developing a statewide Alaskan aquatic GIS system by developing a module for several watersheds, 2) test the module for describing fish species presence or absence, and 3) prototype module connection to the NBII. This work will be accomplished cooperatively with numerous state, federal, and Native partners under the auspices and guidance of the Alaska Geographic Data Committee's Hydrography Workgroup. Results will directly and indirectly support a number of Department of Interior and other state, federal, local, and Native identified information needs.
